I’m really, really excited about our latest project. I’ve been going to art and craft fairs all over the country since I was born. I grew up in Old Town in Chicago and they had an amazing art fair back in the day. My grandmother and parents were always involved. My neighbors were involved. My friends were involved. And from the time I was very young, I was involved, too. I can remember helping out at the information booth, stamping hands for re-entry, keeping a pal company at her mother’s booth, and running my very first business — no, not handbags! — the classic lemonade stand.
Another favorite fair was at the end of the summer in South Haven, Michigan, where my family had a cottage. Every year there was a woman there who made custom Barbie doll clothes. And every year my mother would buy me just a precious few. They were so amazing because each dress or outfit was totally unique and made by hand from wonderful fabrics by a caring seamstress who knew just how to make a nine-year-old doll fanatic happy. I would go home so proud of my treasures, showing them off to friends, whose Barbies were dressed in ordinary store-bought frocks. They all looked the same, but my Barbie was sooooo cool!
It’s been years since I’ve been back to either of those events, but I still go to fairs all over the place. If I see a sign, I love to stop and check it out. And these days it’s even more fun. Today there are all kind of fairs. There are big ones and small ones. They are inside and outside, traditional and contemporary, fancy and funky, hokey and hip, affordable and laughable. And I love them all.I love finding new treasures. And I love discovering new, talented artists.
I’ve added some of the newer fairs to my touring roster (like Renegade in my old Chicago stopping grounds, Wicker Park, and BUST’s Craftacular in NYC) and I’m just plum thrilled about the new energy being poured into them. Now, the hub of this area is Northampton, MA and it’s full of art, music, and all kinds of crafters. It’s known for the music scene and the film festival, and the many writers and artists living here. But we don’t have a really cool event to showcase work from emerging artists and handmade goods from some of the freshest talent around.
Well, we didn’t have one — until now!
I’m proud, thrilled, and deliriously happy to announce the arrival of Twist. I’m producing the event along with my husband Cory. We’ve got a great team helping us put it all together and it’s going to be amazing. Vendors can now apply online, sponsors can get in touch about getting involved, and shoppers can enjoy the buzz as we build up to our opening in September.
So spread the word, get on board, apply to exhibit, shop til you drop, and come celebrate with us. The fair kicks off with a preview Market Party from 5-9pm on 9/5 and then runs all day Saturday from 10am-8pm on 9/6. Details galore at twistfair.com.
ciao,
